Will to live

Another little chip was taken out of mine when I looked at the “style guide” and “tone of voice guidelines” [sic] circulated to all staff in the University of Leeds today. Read them, noting that this comes at a time when academics in the (internationally renowned) School of English are threatened with compulsory redundancies, and weep.  (Incidentally, there should, I think, be a prize for the person who spots the most grammatical and punctuation errors in the style guide. I found three on the first page, without trying very hard).

  1. I don’t know what to say. I really don’t know what to say. This fills me with incoherent rage, and it’s not even my university. Of all the patronising, empty-headed, integrity-sapping crap…

There really ought to be a campaign at Leeds to get as many academics as possible to send hard copies of both guides to the VC’s office (anonymously, given the current conditions) with a label stuck to the cover: ‘Please F*** off.’

The most ironic one is the misused semi-colon on page 7. The rules for colons and semi-colons are on page 8.
